Crane Turntable Grouting

Chinook Industrial attends on-site review of project and with ITW Chockfast Engineering provide recommendations for product selection and project planning.

The existing grout tying a barge crane to the turntable had failed due to overloading and required replacement. Disassembly of the crane was not an option, as the project was time sensitive.

Key requirements for replacement grout:

  • High compressive strength.
  • Longer service life.
  • Fast turn-around.
  • Able to flow into thin space.

The customer requested on-site technical support to review the application and establish a project plan. Chinook Industrial Field Services Personnel attended the site to evaluate and collect critical information in preparation for the chocking application.

Information collected was shared with ITW Engineering who provided general review and calculations for chock loading under the main ring of the crane.

Time constraints did not allow the customer to follow all the recommendations of ITW Engineering, however with the help of Chinook’s Technical Support a procedure was developed that met the customer’s timeline.

ITW Chockfast Orange was selected for this application.

Chockfast Orange is a specially formulated 100% solids, two component inert filled casting compound developed for use as a chocking or grouting material. Chockfast is designed to withstand severe marine and industrial environments involving a high degree of both physical and thermal shock. The compound is non-shrinking and has very high impact and compressive strength in the range of 19,000 psi.

The customer undertook this project on their own, following Chinook recommendations.

  1. Crane was parked long ways on barge, chocking areas were identified where crane rollers were not located and Chockfast Orange was poured. Head boxes were recommended to provide hydrostatic pressure ensuring material filled all available open space.
  2. After a 24-hour cure period the crane was swung through 180 degrees and parked sideways freeing up the remaining turntable areas for Chockfast Orange to be installed.

Within a 72-hour installation window, the crane was back in service.

Chockfast Orange is approved or accepted for its intended marine use by American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd and most other major regulatory agencies worldwide.
