Chinook Industrial and Five Star Products personnel provide technical support to contractors and steel mill engineers to aid in selection of best repair materials for high temperature repair.
A Manitoba Steel Mill planned the rebuild of a high temperature furnace consisting of two 15 ft. x 20 ft. concrete walls subject to extremely high temperatures.
Plans involved the removal of up to 10-inch depth of temporary Gunite repairs, build of a stainless-steel wall on either side of the original concrete foundation walls and the use of a high temperature cementitious grout to be introduced between the stainless-steel inner wall and the existing concrete foundation wall.
Key requirements included high temperature resistance, adhesion to the existing concrete and ability to complete the work within a tight 7-day turn-around schedule.
Five Star Structural Concrete HTR-ES was specified for the high temperature cementitious infill, it was chosen for its ability to perform rapid repairs during shutdowns to coker, kiln, and other high temperature foundry repairs and its excellent bond to concrete substrates.
Five Star Structural Concrete HTR-ES is a unique high-temperature resistant concrete repair material that can be pumped or poured into place. It can be exposed to 1,000°F (538°C) within twenty-four hours and up to 2,400°F (1,316°C) after a 7-day curing procedure. Due to its 90-min. working time and bulk bag capability, Five Star Structural Concrete HTR ES allows for larger /deeper volume placements.
Due to the depth of pour, aggregate extension was recommended for this application.
Grouting of Cables and Tendons
An anchor rod system was designed to tie the stainless-steel sandwich walls together through the cementious foundation walls. Five Star Special Grout 400 was selected to grout in the through bolts and anchor rods, while also penetrating into any cracks in the existing concrete.
Five Star Special Grout 400 is a fine nonmetallic, non-shrink, fluid grout specifically formulated for grouting cables and tendons requiring corrosion protection and heat resistant in excess of 400°F (205°C). Pumpable up to 2 hours at 90°F (32°C). Minimum placement thickness is 1/8”, concentric annular clearance.
Five Star® Special Grout 400 meets the performance requirements of ASTM C 1107-02 Grades A, B, and C, ASTM C 1107-07, CRD-C 621-93 specifications for non-shrink grout, and Post Tensioning Institute specifications for grouting post-tensioned structures.
The project was complete, and the steel mill was back in production within the turnaround schedule.
