Propellor Shaft Coating

Chinook Industrial provides phone support for project planning and on-site service to complete the work. The tailshaft is the final connection to a ship’s propellor and should be protected from salt water corrosion. A properly applied glass-reinforced epoxy laminate will provide the most effective long wearing, corrosion protection for main propulsion propeller shafting and other metal surfaces exposed to severe marine environments.

ITW’s Phillyclad 1775/620-TS and Phillybond No. 6 Repair Compound are designed to provide an effective and qualified materials system for these repairs, developed to exceed the requirements of Navy, Coast Guard and commercial shaft coating specifications.

Our customer had a unique application using bronze and fiberglass liners on the propulsion shaft that required an injectable material to seal cavities under the liners.

With a compressive strength of 12,000 psi, Phillyclad 1775/620-TS offers very low viscosity and a high elongation factor of 30% making it perfect for injection applications where movement and flexibility are key requirements while maintaining an effective seal.

Chinook provided phone support for injection of the epoxy and then travelled to site for application of the propellor shaft coating system.

Once the liners were secured, Phillybond No. 6 Repair Compound was faired onto the liner step transitions to provide a smooth surface. Phillybond No. 6 is a fast –curing, very tough epoxy paste that can be used to fill any corrosion pits or other surface irregularities.

Phillyclad 1775/620-TS was then used in conjunction with fiberglass tape layered over the shaft and wetted out to provide a smooth, pin-hole free surface.

Phillyclad 1775/620-TS is the most generally used shaft coating in the world. Meeting NATO requirements and those of most other navies and Classification Societies. It is also in use on U.S., Canadian and Russian icebreakers. In particular, it meets the U.S. Navy’s present MIL-R-23461 (Ships).
